Insecurity

William Golding utilizes fear as a sort of factor in the Lord of the Flies novel to show how the boys are willing to do anything to get a sense of security. Not only is this behavior visible in the novel itself, it can apply to different things in the real world. The main factor in how insecurity ties in well with fear in the novel is the many things the boys in the novel had feared. Given how the boys had great fears, they had to remain cautious so as to not get hurt trying to stay away from their fear. Insecurity ties in with the fear of the unknown as with the fear of the unknown. With someone having a fear for something they don't even know, they would tend to have an instinct to stay alert, they would have to try to stay secure as much as possible to not interact with their unknown fear. The boys in the island has so much to fear, a "beast," not getting home, dying on the island, or fearing their loss of innocence. The main fear the boys had that had been promine

Fear in Political Ideology

The smell of fear lurks in today's society. In a political view, fear is the source of authority of a ruler. The belief of something is dangerous among the people. The stronger the belief, the more power the leader will gain. Studies have shown that people are more likely to feel conservative when they feel threatened or scared and they feel more liberal when they feel safe. In result, people who are self-identified conservative tend to be more conscious and sensitive when the individual face any threats than the liberals. This specific information applies to both the novel, Lord of the Flies, and the government as they used the fear of a population in order for them to gain power. In Lord of the Flies , Jack used elements that threatens the boys to make the believe that he will protect them as a leader. The use of fear by Jack was the only way that can make the majority of the boys to follow Jack's order. This type of situation correlates to the way people in rea

Fear and People's Mind

Fear is a fundamental theme and concept in Lord of the Flies , however, it is not limited to just the novel. Fear is an emotion that lies within all humans in real life whether they're children or adults. One of the significant effects of fear in life is effects to society's mental health. Fear is an emotion that is triggered by a perceived threat. It is actually a survival mechanism that helps us respond to danger in order to defend us. The effects of fear would include outcomes of anxiety as being afraid of something would make an individual anxious towards their surrounding as they're avoiding it at all cost. The outcome of anxiety stays within the person, but there are also outcomes that directly encounters other parts of society. Creating assumptions and speculations. To make claims on a certain thing, on whether something did or did not happen. In the novel, this scenario could be found in the situation where the boys and most of the littluns are making up stories

Fear and Other Themes

"Maybe," [...] "maybe there is a beast." [...] "Maybe it's only us." (Golding, 89) These had been the words of Simon to try and ease the tension against the boys and the existence of a beast. This had been a notable turning point in the novel as it dictates how much Simon had realized of the boys insanity. The main context of this quote was how the boys were worrying too much on a new threat, a beast that one claimed came out of the water, through this the boys had no idea of what to fear next, this part of the novel had marked Ralph and Jack's relationship going downhill as it would be shown how they got split up entirely. Fear had some place in the split up of Ralph and Jack and marking the beginning of savagery vs. civilization. The reason for Jack's success in achieving people to join his savage tribe is how Jack promises protection and meat, he had promised protection from the outside so the boys would have nothing more to fear as a res

The Changes in the Boys

Image
Fear became the very reason that the boys changed. From the change in mind set to the change in behavior. From a civilized community to a group of savage murderers. Thus, the concept of fear underlines the plot of the Lord of the Flies . Emotions strongly influence the behavior of an individual. Golding used this information to show the readers that the emotion of fear can lead to a behavior that can defend an individual. The plot of the novel Lord of the Flies is to highlight the changes that the boys have experienced while surviving on the uninhabited island. The boys started the journey to survive on the island by setting some rules that can help them realize that they are still civilized people. As they were still living under the rules, they were having a discussion about the fear of a boy in the group. The fear of the Beastie. That discussion made the whole group question whether or not the belief of the monstrous figure is lurking on the very island that they are on

The Loss of Innocence

Image
Fear has affected the boys a lot. To the extent they discover that what they fear could just be something in themselves. To the point of downfall of civilisation. The emotion of fear of the boys consumes their thoughts in a way that they start to create assumptions and stories of questionable scenarios. These things has lead to a sense of their loss of innocence. Being afraid of something makes someone stronger as they are more aware and cautious of every step they take. They boys in Lord of the Flies defends themselves, which has lead to the loss of innocence. Their loss of innocence began when they start to abandon the rules they once implemented and the role of Ralph as the chief. It continues with the division of the group and to the point that the boys only think about hunting and surviving. It follows up to an extent that boys are no longer represented as just kids, but rather unrecognisable savages as they were no longer addressed with their names and dresses messily with d

The Fall of a Civilization

Image
The Lord of the Flies novel focuses on the story of  several dozen British schoolboys stranded on an isolated island. One student had decided to step up to lead the boys to survive and try to get rescued and becomes voted for the leader against his running partner Jack who he made the leader of the hunting group. Ralph never realized how difficult it is to control an entire population and survive and so he never knew of the fragility of civilization until it had been too late. Split relationships, loss of life and the eventual downfall of civilization is what had left Ralph with nothing left. Ralph had feared that he would eventually lose his civilization due to his relationship with Jack fluctuating and his overall influence over the boys diminishing. The outcome of the boys would be a split up between rescue and hunting. Ralph was afraid he would slip his grip with his civilization as he was one of the several boys who still had a sane mind and wants to get rescued and was still se

The Fear from Within

Image
As the Beastie haunts the boys in Lord of the Flies, it uncovers the dark truth that has yet to be discovered. As the emotion of fear slowly clouded the minds of the boys, it really affects way of thinking critically. On an island that has no other inhabitants than wild animals or trees, the boys loses the sense of security and hence they have the tendency of coming up stories that seem to make sense. The purpose of this is to gain that security that they needed as kids. This was shown when the boys had the discussion regarding the existence of the Beastie. Whether it is real or not, it is still a mystery for them and thus a hunt was set to clarify its very existence. The ignorance that the boys are facing led them to question most of the things that they have encountered on the island. They even questioned about their own selves on whether or not they are the ones responsible for their own actions later in the novel. Lord of the Flies portrays the dark truth about the e

The Beastie

Image
Beastie.  Beast or Beastie.  It is a sign of fear.  In Lord of the Flies, the boys have fears. The isolation of the island from civilization has made them lonely and loose senses of security. The absence of a normal lifestyle of a regular kid from the lack of proper shelter and companies from families and the authorities have created a sense that things are now different. The boys started to question their surrounding and make assumptions which consume their thoughts and produces a developing ongoing feeling of fear.  They are afraid of encountering an unfamiliar figure. Fear of the unknown. Fear of going through a situation that they don’t know of and fear of coming across an entity that no one is aware is present. The boy in the island are influenced by the sounds roaming around at night and the mysterious dark shadows that seem to be following them. They call this a  beastie .  A beastie, supposingly a beast, is the form that the boys are fear of. The beastie is

The Unknown

Image
In Lord of the Flies, the theme of fear is quite prominent and present around the novel as it is a factor that led the boys down into savagery. This kind of fear that the boys experienced had been mainly fearing the unknown, which ties in well with the main idea of the novel that William Golding had wanted to convey, the fear of the unknown. The sort of unknown fear branches into different events in the novel, although a majority ties in within the middle of the novel where they were hesitant of the existence of a sort of beast. The first sign of said beast had been one such large creature that was flying in the air, the beast had actually been a plane in the middle of a dogfight, but the boys had interpreted  such as a beast. None of the boys would believe such as it would be too foolish of a statement, yet there had still been an amount of fear due to the boys not knowing what had been above them. The eventual outcome of the dogfight had been another claim of a beast, a pilot

Fear in the Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Image
The concept of fear was highly elaborated in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. In the previous post, fear is an emotion that rises because of the feeling or belief that something is dangerous or threatening. This particular emotion that we all possess is used by William Golding and turn it into something that pushes the inner monster that every human being have inside themselves. Golding took advantage of the fact that we all fear of death, fear of losing a part of you, fear of humiliation, etc. while trying to point out that it pushes people to do something that is traumatizing. In the novel, the group of boys had a discussion about the presence of a monster-like creature that they call 'Beastie'. They are oblivious about whether or not the 'Beastie' is really on the same island as them. Golding used this scene to portray some hidden messages about human nature. He used the fact that the boys are ignorant about surviving on an island where adults are

Fear

What is fear? What comes to your mind when you hear the word fear ? Do you automatically think about the haunting of the man in the mask carrying a knife in the slasher film "The Scream"? Or do you think about losing someone? Or maybe.. losing yourself? The Scream (1893) by Edvard Munch Fear is defined as the unpleasant emotion caused belief that something is dangerous or threatening. There are uncountable numbers of fear, but people suggest we all share fear of extinction or death; fear of humiliation and worthlessness; fear of abandonment or rejection; and fear of losing a part or control of our body or self. All these fears shows that every single human fear eventually relates to themselves and their mental state. If someone is afraid that their loved ones are going to be gone someday, it's being afraid of losing, and the thought that we are going to be alone. There are also fear of fear. The thought of being in a unpleasant state of fear. Being afraid
