Fear in Political Ideology
The smell of fear lurks in today's society.
In a political view, fear is the source of authority of a ruler.
The belief of something is dangerous among the people.
The stronger the belief, the more power the leader will gain.
Studies have shown that people are more likely to feel conservative when they feel threatened or scared and they feel more liberal when they feel safe. In result, people who are self-identified conservative tend to be more conscious and sensitive when the individual face any threats than the liberals. This specific information applies to both the novel, Lord of the Flies, and the government as they used the fear of a population in order for them to gain power.
In Lord of the Flies, Jack used elements that threatens the boys to make the believe that he will protect them as a leader. The use of fear by Jack was the only way that can make the majority of the boys to follow Jack's order. This type of situation correlates to the way people in real life would act when the government uses the people's fears to attract their attention and follow what they have to say. In the novel, Jack made use of torture and the threats of a Beastie in order for him to overthrow Ralph in being in charged of the boys.
"-and then, the beast might try to come in. You remember how he crawled" (Golding 143).
"He came - disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat. So watch; and be careful" (143)
Jack's manipulation of fear to power was also used in society today. One good example is the use of fear of the people to gain authority by the government is the Donald Trump. People voted for Trump's party because of the citizens' common fear, then Trump had to constantly remind them that the fear that the people have believed really is threatening the country in order for him to win the election. It also mean that Trump needs to keep the citizens at a constant state of fear to gain their trust in him and get the support that he needs to be the leader of the country.
